LASER SHOW DESIGN, INC. is the brainchild of Producer Doug McCullough. Since starting out in the late 1960’s Doug has mastered the choreography of light, sound, lasers, and a range of other unique media to produce stunning presentations which exceed expectations and leave an indelible impression.
Here are some of Doug’s credits:

1968 - Formed “Babylonian Pigpen Light Obbligato” psychedelic light show company - performed many live concerts with the top rock bands in the Washington, DC area.

1970 - Performed in multi-media “Happening” directed by avant-garde composer John Cage.

1970 - Performed light shows at New York City’s “Electric Circus”.

1970 - Utilized Helium-Neon laser to create abstract imagery in live performance with electronic composer Morton Subotnick.

1972 - Formed “The Lumia Company” to develop multi-media techniques and the art of light.

1973 - Performed live light show (original composition “Let There Be Light”) as guest artist for the “Expanded Cinema” series at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC.

1974 - Performed light shows with multi-media dance troupe “Clear Cell Fire” European tour.

1977 - Founded Audio Visual Imagineering (AVI) as a sole proprietorship. After AVI incorporated in 1981, served as AVI’s president until 1997.

1979 - Performed “industrial theater” laser opening for the Association of Physical Fitness Centers”, Chicago, IL.

1979 - Opened “Laserdrive” at the Miami Space Transit Planetarium to sell-out audiences. This planetarium show was a novel combination of laser imagery, liquid projections, multi-image, and lumia effects.

Note:   Was “hands on” with every aspect of the business, including building projectors and control consoles, setting up equipment, live performances as “laserist”, soundtrack mixing, show design and programming, advertising and promotion, etc.

1982 - Introduced real sequential laser animation in a planetarium show entitled “Visual Music”.

1982 - Presented “Laser Animation: New Light On The Future” paper at the International Planetarium Society (IPS) Annual Meeting, Vancouver, BC.

1983 - Re-energized the New York City market for laser shows with the opening of an all Pink Floyd show at the Hayden Planetarium.

Note:   Pioneered a true thematic mix of abstract and graphic laser imagery in planetarium and multi-image corporate shows. Created many legendary (and often imitated) planetarium laser shows, such as Laser Floyd, Laser Zeppelin, Laser Beatles, Laser Genesis, Laser Bowie, Laser U2, etc. that were performed during extended runs at planetarium theaters in major cities across North America (including New York, Toronto, Boston, St. Louis, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Detroit, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Richmond, Charlotte, etc.)

1985 - Specialized in providing laser productions for corporate presentations and special events. Created generic laser “modules” for openings, closings, speaker introductions, coffee breaks, product reveals, etc. - making lasers more applicable to corporate clients. Produced laser presentations for numerous high profile clients such as: AT & T, Cessna, CitiBank, COMSAT, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, General Electric, General Foods, ICI Pharma, IBM, MCI, Nationwide Insurance, Panasonic, Pepsi, Sears, 7-11, Walt Disney World, IKON, Lancome, Public Relations Society of America, Orange Bowl Halftime, Teamsters Union, Wyeth Laboratories, etc.

1985 - Featured guest artist at the Matrix: Midland Arts Festival presenting the use of lasers to visually interpret the music of J.S. Bach.

1986 - Created award winning laser/multi-image trade show for Xerox. The precise registration and sophistication of the interaction between the slides and laser imagery (both abstract and graphic) set a new standard.

1986 - Featured speaker for the Association of Multi-Image (AMI) on integrating lasers with multi-image, Rochester, NY.

1987 - Produced a laser tribute to Ronald Reagan at the President’s Dinner, Washington, DC. In describing this laser presentation, the Washington Post wrote “Ronald Reagan has finally met his match as a Republication crowd pleaser”.

1987 - Performed live laser accompaniment with the National Symphony Orchestra at the “Star Wars” concert at Wolf Trap, VA.

Note:   Pioneered the extensive use of scanned mid-air beam effects with no “bounce” mirrors. This “look” of two lasers creating crisscrossing mid-air beam effects has become an industry standard.

1987 - Helped closely with the founding of the International Laser Display Association (ILDA). Served on the original Ethics Committee. Over the next 20 years, received numerous ILDA awards for “hands-on” work in creative show production.

Note:   Developed many novel laser display applications for groundbreaking ceremonies, submarine christenings, and opening celebrations of museums, aquariums, shopping malls, sporting arenas, etc.

1987 - Bell Atlantic “Future Light” trade show exhibit - extensively used fiber optically fed beam effects as a symbolic “connecting device” for imagery displayed on an array of video monitors (this presentation was awarded special recognition at the first ILDA awards competition).

1988 - Created “laser beacon” using two 30 watt Argon lasers mounted atop the AT & T building in downtown New York City to commemorate “Science Week”; worked extensively with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and CDRH (Center for Devices and Radiological Health) to establish the precedents for safety clearance of non-terminating laser beam effects in high air traffic areas (beams were sighted 60 miles away!).

1988 - Created a special presentation at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA to celebrate Gordon Gould’s invention of the laser.

1989 - Produced touring theater presentation (including portable 250 seat theater) titled “Saudi Arabia: Yesterday and Today”. This multi-media extravaganza featured three high-power lasers (plus three fiber optic remote heads), six video projectors, thirty-six slide projectors, and discreet multi-channel surround sound.
